Student Chapter @ The University of Alabama in Huntsville
The University of Alabama in Huntsville is a public university in Huntsville, AL and is a member university of the University of Alabama System. The College of Science houses the Department of Atmospheric and Earth Science (AES). Within this program, undergrad students can pursue concentrations in Atmospheric Science and Meteorology as well as Earth Ecosystems. Graduate students can seek MS degrees in Atmospheric Science or Earth System Science, along with a PhD in Atmospheric Science.

Welcome to the University of Alabama in Huntsville’s Student Chapter of The American Meteorological Society and National Weather Association! We are a student-led organization founded in 1994 whose purpose is to exemplify the missions of the AMS and NWA by bringing students together to advance the understanding, application, and outreach of meteorology for society.Located in North Alabama, our chapter is home to students practicing all aspects of atmospheric and earth science including educating our local community and engaging our college's students. About AMS:
The American Meteorological Society advances the atmospheric and related sciences, technologies, applications, and services for the benefit of society. Since 1919, AMS has been a leader in fostering and disseminating the latest atmospheric, oceanic, hydrologic and related research. The remarkable scientific advances by the AMS community have transformed what we know and how we live. AMS builds connections between people across the weather, water, and climate enterprise. We strengthen this vibrant community and offer opportunities for researchers, forecasters, entrepreneurs, educators, students, and others to grow and succeed. AMS creates opportunities to collaborate, network, and learn from others, advancing careers and society at the same time.
About NWS:
The National Weather Association is a member-led, all inclusive, 501(c)6 non-profit, professional association supporting and promoting excellence in operational meteorology and related activities since 1975. Members have many opportunities to share information, news, studies and concerns related to operational meteorology and related activities through committee work, submitting correspondence or articles to NWA publications such as the Newsletter and the Journal of Operational Meteorology, making presentations or leading workshops at the Annual Meetings, helping to maintain and add information to the NWA website, and to network with great people in a wide variety of careers from well-known senior professionals to weather hobbyists.
Club Activities:
- Our monthly club meetings occur in the Cramer Research Hall/National Space Science and Technology Center (320 Sparkman Drive, Huntsville, AL) Our meetings consist of discussing chapter business, development workshops, and presentations from various meteorology professionals. Meetings will be announced on our Social Media.- A few times a semester, we will host events outside of our club meetings. In the past, these events have included, nature hikes, baseball games, themed socials, cookouts, and holiday celebrations!- Once a year we host the Rocket City Weather Fest! RCWF is a free annual Public Event for All Ages at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. This is a public outreach event where you can learn about the weather, engage with professional meteorologists, and learn how to prepare for weather hazards.- Our club provides snacks for sale in the break room on the 2nd floor of SWIRLL and in the NSSTC. All snack sales benefit UAH AMS/NWA, please consider supporting us!
Membership Info and Resources
Any UAH student can join regardless of status, you do not have to be an AES major. We only ask you to bring a smile and a passion for weather! Yearly dues are $10 USD and can be paid through our Venmo (@UAHAMSNWA) Club events will be announced on our GroupMe chat and other social media pages.
